As well as teaching children effective phonics we actively teach and promote reading across the curriculum.

Across the school this is taught through daily reading sessions focussing on decoding text, learning new vocabulary and developing comprehension skills.

In nursery children share books and listen to adults read daily, this progresses to individual reading with the teacher in reception in preparation for guided reading which begins when the children are ready.

KS1 children are assessed termly by teachers and matched with an appropriate reading book that encourages them to practise decoding and understanding. Children bring reading books home and are encouraged to read for ten minutes daily with an adult. Children in KS1 follow the oxford reading tree scheme.

KS2 children are assessed using ‘reading pro’ which allows teachers to also match children to an appropriate reading book. Children are given opportunities to demonstrate their understanding by completing a quiz around the book they have read. Children are encouraged to access reading pro at home and complete the online quiz as well as read for ten minutes. Reading pro can be accessed via the link below:
